October is career fair season at NIU.
With many companies coming to campus to network with students, this is an ideal time to think about life post-graduation.
NIU’s College of Engineering & Engineering Technology (CEET) hosts its own job fair each year, catering to the career and internship needs of CEET students. This year, computer science students also are encouraged to attend the CEET job fair.
Through the job fair, even freshmen have secured internships for their sophomore year. Last semester, 100 percent of CEET seniors had been placed in positions before graduation.
The job fair is not only a good way for students to connect with potential employers but also an opportunity for companies to strengthen a lasting partnership with CEET.
For employers, attending the job fair saves on recruiting costs and also reduces the high cost of hiring full-time engineers by allowing them access to NIU students. This is especially helpful to companies that spend up to $30,000 just to find one qualified engineer to fill a position.
“Our engineering and engineering technology job fair is often the first point of contact a company has with our college,” said Amanda Carrier, marketing specialist for the college. “After hiring a full time employee, typically companies return to create ongoing internship pipelines for our students that begin sophomore or junior year, continue onto full time placement, and eventually end in long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships including senior design, our corporate scholars program, and engineers in residence.”
This year, the CEET job fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in rooms 354 and 358 of the Engineering Building. Thirty-six companies already have registered for the fair, and more than 250 students are expected to attend.
