The Northern Illinois women’s tennis team fought hard in Day Two of the DePaul Invitational, ending the day with a chance to win five championships – two of them being an all-Huskie affair.
In Flight A of the doubles draw both Huskie teams clawed their way to the consolation championship.
Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) took care of business with an 8-2 match victory over Barthels/Hamels (Valparasio). The pair of Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) and Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) also captured victory with an 8-6 decision over Sufi/Lawson (DePaul) to create an all Huskie consolation championship Sunday.
In Flight B of doubles the both NIU teams lost their only matches of the day. Mary Malkin (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance) and Ilse Pacheco (San Luis Potosí, Mexico/Alma Patria) went down 8-4 to Kurer/Skemp (Milwaukee) and Maria Rozo (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio Femenino) and Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne’s Diocesan College) lost 8-2 against Abello/Nisbet (Illinois State).
In Flight A of singles there will be another all Huskie consolation championship as Youel and Dekkinga both won two matches to advance through. Youel’s first match went in straight sets 6-1,6-1 against Ilives (Illinois State) and then she took out Soule (Milwaukee) in three sets 7-6,1-6,10-4. On the other side, Dekkinga battled through the field winning both matches in straight sets. The first was a 7-5, 6-4 decision against Ramynse (Western Michigan) and then her second was 6-0,6-0 sweep over against Hamel (Valparasio).
In Flight B De La Torre also advanced to a consolation championship as she took out Fredlake (Valparasio) in straight sets 6-3,6-0.
In Flight C McDonald was one of two Huskies to take the court as she lost in three sets 6-4,5-7,10-6 to Abello (Illinois State). The other Huskie, Malkin, advanced to the consolation championship thanks to O’Reilly (Valparasio) not being able to compete.
In Flight D the Huskies also had two take the court. Alvarez won her opening match in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 against Nguyen (Lewis) but then dropped her second against Nisbet (Illinois State) in straight sets 6-1,6-1. On the other side, Pacheco lost her only match in straight sets 6-1,6-4 to Phillips (Illinois State).
In Flight E Rozo fought her way to the championship match winning bother her matches on the day. Roso defeated Mills (Lewis) in straight sets 6-2,6-0 and took down Nisbest (Illinois State) 6-4,6-0. Also in Flight E was Sarah Boyd (Aurora, Ill./Alpha Omega Academy), who lost her only match to Paulson (Illinois State) in three sets 4-6,6-4,10-8.
“The way we bounced back today was awesome,” said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. “We came into the day refocused — I told them to make the opponent earn whatever they get. We still have a long way to go but I’m looking forward to Sunday. It was an overall good effort.”
The Huskies will wrap up the invite Sunday afternoon in their last event before the ITA Regionals, scheduled Oct. 19 to Oct. 21 in Rockford, Ill.
