Homecoming 5K invites participants, volunteers

Homecoming 5K runners pass the NIU Convocation Center.Campus Recreation will host the third annual Homecoming 5K run/walk at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, families and community members all are welcome to participate. No matter what your skill level, this is a simple course that offers enjoyment and a challenge.

The 5K is an out-and-back race, and the terrain is flat and fast.

The race route starts and ends at the Student Recreation Center, winds around Huskie Stadium, past the Convocation Center, to Northern View, through Central Park then returning to the Rec. The race route is on blacktop and some sidewalks.

Those who register by 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, will receive a Dri-FIT T-shirt (not guaranteed a size) and a goody bag. Registration is available online.

The cost is $20 per participant for those who pay in advance. If paying by cash or check, register at the Campus Recreation Kiosk at the NIU Student Recreation Center. Credit card payments are taken online.

Race day cost is $25; registration is held from 6 to 7:30 a.m. at the Student Recreation Center. Only cash or check is accepted that day. Race day registrants will receive T-shirts and goody bags as long as supplies last (neither T-shirts nor sizes are guaranteed).

There are no refunds, and registration fees are not transferable.

Volunteers also are needed to help with set-up, food distribution, encouragement and traffic flow along the course.
