Senior Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) tied for 12th with a final round 72 as the Northern Illinois men’s golf team concluded play in the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Sunday at Illinois State’s Weibring Golf Club.

NIU posted team score of 303 in Sunday’s final round, identical to its score in Saturday afternoon’s second round, as the Huskies finished tied for 10th in the team standings.

“We are pleased with the consistency that we are getting from our top two players, Griffin (Bauman) and Nick (Schiavi),” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “Griffin didn’t have his A-game today, he only hit 10 greens, but his short game was outstanding. He got up-and-in four-or-five times. He really saved a shaky round with a great short game and Nick is getting better and better every tournament.

“Most of the issues today were short-game related, just not chipping and putting, chipping from good spots or not being able to recover from missed execution, which made it tough for us to move up.”

Illinois won the team competition with a 54-hole total of 870, Pep Angles of Central Arkansas claimed medalist honors with a total of 213.

Bauman had a very steady round, carding 13 pars with three bogies and a pair of birdies. He opened his round with five-straight pars and concluded it with seven more even numbers. The tie for 12th was Bauman’s seventh career top-20 finish.

Sophomore Nick Schiavi (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) carded the round of the day for the Huskies, shooting an even-par 71, helping give him a tie for 28th overall. Schiavi’s 71 included six birdies but also featured a pair of double bogies and was the low-round of the weekend for NIU.

Senior Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) carded a final round 81 to finish with a 54-hole total of 236, tied for 56th. Sophomore Nick Huggins (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and senior Paul Hammerschmidt (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) each finished with rounds of 80 on Sunday. Huggins tied for 62nd with a total of 238 while Hammerschmidt was one stroke behind with a total of 239, tying for 65th.

The Huskies will return to action in two weeks when they compete in the John Dallio Memorial, Saturday Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7, hosted by DePaul at Ruffled Feathers CC in Lemont, Ill.
