Doubles play started Friday afternoon at the Drake Invitational, and the Northern Illinois duo of Axel Lagerlof and Simon Formont won the B flight with a trio of wins.
It is the second-straight week a Huskie doubles pair has won a flight.
Formont, a freshman from Orleans, France, and Lagerlof, a junior from Malmo, Sweden, opened the first round with an 8-3 victory over Gustavus Adolphus pair Brad Entwistle and Joe MacGibbon, followed by an 8-6 triumph against Ben Gendron and Jordan Loughnan from Northern Colorado.
In the finals, duo Motasam Al-Houni and Juan Luis Chu were seeking revenge for their fallen teammates from Gustavus Adolphus. In a thrilling tennis contest, Formont and Lagerlof defeated Al-Houni and Chu, 9-8 (5).
In other action, Frederic Cadieux and Dor Amir finished 2-1 on the day after falling in the semifinals. The duo would defeat GAU’s Tyler Johnson and Grant Leisner, 8-5, in the consolation final of the A flight.
In the C flight, Max Phillips and Jovan Zeljkovic also finished 2-1 and won the consolation final over UNC’s Ryan Lane and Eric Schuemans, 8-4.
Singles play at the Drake Invitational begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.
