The Northern Illinois University women’s golf team held on to fifth place after posting a two-round total of 638 at Harborside International Golf Center in the Cougar Classic.

“It was tough out there today. It was extremely windy,” NIU head coach Kim Kester said. “The girls did well with the wind, obviously improved from yesterday. After the first two tournaments, we’re off to a good start and that’s what you like to see.”

Northern Illinois trimmed two strokes off its first round score, shooting a final round 318, seven shots behind the winner, Indiana State (631) and three shots from second. Valparaiso and IUPUI tied for second spot with a 635, while Cleveland State was fourth with a 637.

Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) and Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) finished in the top 10 for the Huskies, carding a 154 and 155 respectively. Parthie retained fourth place while Niemiec climbed seven spots to finish in sixth.

“She was extremely smart off the tee and not hitting a driver when normal conditions you probably would’ve hit driver,” Kester said of Niemiec’s performance today. “She kept her ball in play and kept it as simple as possible.”

Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) shot a 164 (83-81), to move up 14 spots on the leaderboard to 30th, and Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) trimmed five shots off her first round total finish with a 165 (85-80) to tie for 36th. Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) cut 10 strokes from her first round score, posting a final round 81 to finish in 65th with a 172.

The Huskies return to the course Saturday, Sept. 22, when NIU travels to Muncie, Ind., to compete in the Cardinal Classic at The Players Club.
