City of DeKalb police are investigating an off-campus armed robbery that occurred early morning Sunday, September 9.
According to NIU police two NIU students were walking in the 1100 block of Varsity Boulevard early Sunday morning when they were approached by two individuals who demanded money from the students.
The suspects claimed that they had a weapon though, according to police, no weapon was displayed. Police say no one was injured in the incident.
The suspects are described as two African-American males; one of the suspects was wearing a dark hoodie. No additional description of the suspects is available at this time.
NIU police advise area and university residents to use caution when traveling on foot in the area where the robbery occurred.
Students can take advantage of NIU’s Late Night Ride service which runs daily between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. NIU police also recommend that students and area residents walk in groups should they feel it necessary to travel by foot during late night/early morning hours.

On 9-9-12 at 3:52 AM, the DeKalb Police Department received the report of an armed robbery that had just occurred. A male and female in the rear parking lot of1120 Varsity Blvd.reported that they were approached by two male black subjects. One of the suspects displayed a handgun and the female ran. The male victim was robbed of a purse that he was carrying for his female friend, a phone, and keys.
The suspects were described as follows:
Suspect #1: black hoodie, short hair, about 5’09” and 150-160 lbs.
Suspect #2: grey sweatshirt or hoodie, about 5’10” and 150-160 lbs.

Though the victims in this case were merely walking from their car to the adjacent apartment building, the DeKalb Police Department would like to remind our residents and students to always be aware of their surroundings, especially when walking at night. Travel in groups whenever possible, avoid dark areas, do not wear headphones, and don’t become too engrossed in your phone or other electronic devices. Avoid intoxication when walking any distance, as your awareness and reactions will be hampered. Awareness is an important component of crime prevention.
