Hey, where’d the banners go?

Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow: photo of NIU banners on campusStudents and faculty returning to NIU’s DeKalb campus this summer following the end of the spring semester might have noticed something missing.

The banners that had adorned light standards across campus are now down.

No, they weren’t stolen. They didn’t blow away in an early summer windstorm. And they didn’t melt in the summer heat.

The NIU banners that feature both the university logo, athletics logo and each of NIU’s seven colleges have simply been relocated to Chicago as a part of NIU’s branding initiative.

“The NIU banners are an excellent way for the university to gain visibility for its colleges and programs,” said Brad Hoey, director of Communications and Marketing. “The partnership between NIU Athletics and Soldier Field has afforded the university the opportunity to display the banners on the Soldier Field campus for a second straight year.”

With the exception of two Chicago Bears exhibition games in August, the banners will remain on display on the lakefront through the NIU-Iowa football game slated for Labor Day weekend.

“It’s a great opportunity to get the NIU brand in front of the Chicago audience and showcase our colleges and high-quality academic programs,” Hoey said.

NIU plays host to the Hawkeyes for Soldier Field Showdown III – the season kick-off is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1 – at the fabled venue which has become the second home of the Huskies. Fans can order tickets online at, by calling the Ticketmaster toll-free number at 1-800-745-3000, or in person at any Ticketmaster outlet.
