‘Planned’ power outages enable improvements to aging electrical infrastructure on campus

July 16, 2012

Photo of a plug in a wall outletA series of power outages are planned in upcoming weeks as NIU electricians replace some of the major electrical cabling that has supplied power to campus buildings for more than 50 years.

Planned replacement now and under staff control is more palatable than unplanned replacement as the cabling continues to fail.

Teams will work Fridays and Saturdays with the hopes of causing minimal disruption.

During the power outages, all building occupants are advised to make the necessary adjustments and/or shutdown of sensitive systems and equipment. Please take care to ensure that all arrangements are taken as necessary during these time periods for the care of items dependent upon electrical power and/or the items stored in such units.

Following the restoration of power, affected faculty and staff are asked to check that all that should be operational is, in fact, operational.

Workers can safely, and without too much effort, hook up temporary generators to power the entirety of these three buildings.

The generators are carefully serviced and monitored. They have provided a reliable alternative in the past and are expected to do so for this project.

Power outages to disconnect the temporary generators and return the buildings back to the campus power grid are tentatively planned between 4 and 7 a.m. Monday, July 23, and Tuesday, July 24.

Lowden Hall, Still Gym, Still Hall

Temporary generators for these buildings are challenging to install and involve running power cables down the main hallways, which is not safe. Crews will hook up a small generator to the servers and network switches in Lowden.

Otherwise, these buildings will be completely without power. Staff who work in these buildings should not be in their offices during these outages. Staff should clear out the refrigerators and shut down computers ahead of time.

A power outage is planned between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday, July 20, and/or Saturday, July 21.

Davis Hall, La Tourette Hall, Swen Parson Hall

Occupants of these buildings should follow the same recommendations given to staff who work in Lowden and Still.

Power outages are planned from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

  • Friday, July 27, and/or Saturday, July 28
  • Friday, Aug. 3, and/or Saturday, Aug. 4
  • Friday, Aug. 10, and/or Saturday, Aug. 11
