The Northern Illinois track and field team kicked off their weekend Thursday at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

Two Huskies, Amanda Schwab and Juliane Totzke, competed on the light first day of competition, while the team sits in 10th place through day one.

“The ladies competing today were ready, but could not finish on a high note,” said Huskie head coach Connie Teaberry. “We hope to pick up the intensity tomorrow.”

Schwab started things off for NIU with a 13th place finish in the javelin. After hitting 104-00 (31.69m) on her first throw, the senior sat in sixth place following the initial round. However, Schwab was unable to surpass that mark in round two and fouled on her final throw.

Meanwhile, Totzke struggled in the 10,000 meters, dropping out midway through the race due to breathing problems.

The Huskies return to action today with a full slate of action. Competition begins at 11 a.m. CT with the shot put, while running events begin at noon CT with the 1500 meters prelims.
