NIU announces Money Smart Week events

April 13, 2012

Money Smart Week logoNorthern Illinois University will host seven financial literacy and money management events at its Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Rockford and main DeKalb campuses during the Federal Reserve Bank’s Money Smart Week.

The week is scheduled from Saturday, April 21, through Saturday, April 28.

“Money Smart Week is an excellent opportunity to provide free and valuable information to students and families throughout NIU’s service region,” says Anne Kaplan, vice president for university outreach.

“We strive to deliver academic and professional development programs both online and at convenient locations across the region, and Money Smart Week is an excellent example of how we work with local partners to provide these valuable services to the community.”

Highlighting the week’s events are presentations by NIU’s Financial Cents titled “Empowering Financial Independence,” which will take place at the DeKalb, Hoffman Estates and Naperville campuses. Part of NIU’s Office of Student Academic Success, Financial Cents peer educators assist with understanding the importance of financial planning and money management during the college years and beyond.

Financial ₵ents logo“Money Smart Week is our biggest outreach program to date. We’ll be traveling to the regional centers – Naperville and Hoffman Estates – to deliver financial presentations to them as well as a presentation on our main DeKalb campus,” says peer educator Thurston Booth, who will graduate in the spring with a master of accounting science degree from NIU’s College of Business.

“We try to inform people on financial hardships they could face if they don’t manage their budget, manage their credit cards and manage their FICO scores. We show them how to do that.”

“The Office of Student Academic Success is excited to collaborate with University Outreach to provide these free financial literacy events during Money Smart Week to residents in the region,” adds Dana Gautcher, director of the Office of Student Academic Success. “The sessions are open to the public to anyone who may benefit from the programs.”
