Free tax preparation available as deadline looms

Photo of a 1040 tax formThe IRS deadline for filing income tax returns is quickly approaching, and the Department of Accountancy at NIU wants to help by providing free tax preparation to students, faculty, staff, and the DeKalb community.

In conjunction with the Volunteer Income Tax Association (VITA), IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers from the Accountancy Department in the NIU College of Business are offering free tax preparation for individuals earning less than $25,000 and families earning less than $50,000.

Assistance will be available from noon to 8 p.m. Thursdays at the Goodwill store on Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

VITA will also provide tax services to students from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 6, in Room 406 of the Holmes Student Center.

Interested filers must bring:

  • Valid photo ID
  • Social Security card (for everyone in the family)
  • Copy of last year’s tax return
  • All W-2s and 1099s (wages and unemployment)
  • Property tax bill
  • College expenses
