Women’s Resource Center to host two events focused on healthy body image, self-esteem

Little in the Middle publicity photoThe Women’s Resource Center at NIU will host two events during the first week of April focused on body image.

A panel discussion titled “Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness” is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, in the Duke Ellington Ballroom of the Holmes Student Center.

The discussion will highlight various important topics related to body image, fashion, health and eating disorders awareness.

NIU collaborators on the panel will include the Center for Access-Ability Resources, Military Student Services, the Counseling and Student Development Center, Health Enhancement and the School of Family, Consumer and Nutrition Sciences.

Lee Ann Park, an NIU alumna who is the owner and creator of the successful Little in the Middle clothing line, will be a guest presenter.

A fashion show titled “Own It! Embrace Your Beauty” will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the ballroom. More than 400 people are expected to attend.

“Own It!” celebrates and promotes healthy body image and self-esteem through fashion. The message encompasses and embraces health, self-esteem, positive body image, diversity and confidence. Students will model clothing and express themselves creatively through dance, performance and art.

Johanna Kandel, founder and president of the Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness, is the fashion show emcee and special speaker.

J.C. Penney in DeKalb will be the exclusive clothing sponsor for the models.
