Northern Illinois track and field athletes head outdoors for the first time in 2011-12 when they compete Saturday, March 17, at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge in Orlando, Fla.

The meet begins at 8 a.m. CT with the javelin throw, while running events start at 12:30 p.m. CT with the 4×100 relay.

“We are excited to compete outdoors again,” said Huskie head coach Connie Teaberry. “Since being in Orlando, we have completed several productive practice sessions. We are hopeful that our continued improvements shine through in our performances this weekend.”

The meet will feature eight schools from seven different conferences, including host Central Florida, Illinois and national power Florida. In addition, Florida International, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville, Marshall and Rhode Island are also slated to compete in the season-opening meet.

NIU will be looking to carry the momentum over from the indoor season outdoors, as the Huskies broke 11 school records. The team also placed seventh with 48 points at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, both program records.

In addition, Chanel Kellyman and Megan Gregory became the first NIU MAC individual champions by winning the 60 meters and 60 hurdles, respectively.
