The Northern Illinois women’s tennis team took down the Milwaukee Panthers on Sunday by a score of 4-3 for its sixth win of the season.
It was the second time this year the Huskies found themselves on the winning end while at the Boylan Center. With the victory, NIU sits at 6-4 on the season.
The win was led by the singles play of seniors Sara McLaughlin (Moline, Ill./Moline) and Emily Rogers (Rochester, Minn./Century). McLaughlin notched a three-set victory over Milwaukee’s Maddy Soule 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Rogers picked up her first win since February 5 by beating Kelly Fritz 6-0, 6-2.
Also, adding a tally to the singles win column was freshman Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central), who took down the Panther’s Chelsea Bailey by score of 6-4, 6-1.
Doubles play, a strong spot for the Huskies all season, went 2-1 on the day bringing its overall record to 19-11 on the season. The first victory came from the freshmen combination of Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia) and Youel. The win came over the team of Gow/Bailey by score of 8-2 to move Youel/De La Torre to 4-4 on the year.
Picking up the other doubles win was the red-hot tandem of freshman Stephanie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. Anne’s Diocesan College) and sophomore Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan). The duo won their sixth straight match by defeating the pairing of Fritz/Kurer 8-6. With the doubles victories, NIU was able to edge out a 4-3 win that puts the Huskies in a good place heading into spring break.
“It was a tough day,” said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. “We played our tails off. It was a complete team win. Everyone participated in this one. There is no rest for the weary. We need to get ready for spring break.”
The Huskies will continue their schedule over spring break with three matches in Daytona, Fla.
NIU will meet Youngstown State in a neutral setting Tuesday, March 13, and visit Embry-Riddle Wednesday, March 14. The Huskies will end their spring break road trip Friday, March 16, against Bethune Cookman.
