Grammy “Best New Artist” nominee J. Cole, the rap world’s newest sensation, is coming to the NIU Convocation Center at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18.

Cole is headlining the 2012 Campus Consciousness Tour, which also features Big K.R.I.T.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for J. Cole go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16.

Tickets are $35, and are available at the NIU Convocation Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

NIU students receive a $5 discount with a valid NIU OneCard at the NIU Convocation Center box office (limit two).

In an era saturated with upstart MCs all striving for the coveted status of “next big thing,” the story of 24-year-old North Carolina native J. Cole (born Jermaine Cole) is a refreshing exception to the quick route for fame and success.

Soulful and strong, J. Cole’s lyrics touch on everything from his upbringing in North Carolina to the poverty and hopelessness that affect his community.

After graduating magna cum laude from St. John’s University, he was the first artist signed to Jay-Z’s new Roc Nation label.

Logo of the Campus Consciousness TourThe Campus Consciousness Tour is a project of Reverb, a non-profit founded by environmentalist Lauren Sullivan and her musician husband, Adam Gardner of Guster.

The tour aims to educate and mobilize students to take a positive action for the planet while keeping the environmental footprint of the tour itself to a minimum.

This spring marks Reverb’s 10th Campus Consciousness Tour.

While at the concert, students will be able to register to vote, learn how they can take action for a healthy planet, keep dough out of politics and go plastic-free. During the day, students can visit the Reverb Eco-Village for free fun and social action including live music, free ice cream, games, prizes and more.
