Top employers throughout Chicago, Illinois and beyond hire NIU students for top careers and internships in management and leadership positions.
Employers look to NIU students and graduates, posting 2,496 jobs and 956 internships/co-ops through Victor eRecruiting between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010.
One hundred and 39 employers came to the Spring 2011 job fair, 13 more than than attended the Fall 2011 event. The Spring 2011 internship fair brought out representatives from 75 companies, a full two dozen more than the fall fair.
The fairs, which also include the educator fair and the health professions fair, are only part of what Career Services offers Huskies who want to lead in their chosen and dream professions.
Students also can visit the Career Resource Center for individual career counseling, practice interviews, resume and cover letter reviews, on-campus job interviews and credential services for educators.
Workshops also are offered on successful interviewing, networking and job-search strategies.
Results can be measured in average starting salaries for NIU graduates.
Numbers provided by 2009 graduates indicate higher earnings, when compared to national averages, for alums in business ($45,694 vs. $43,427 nationally), education ($35,794 vs. $34,354), health and human sciences ($47,687 vs. $39,649) and liberal arts and sciences ($40,316 vs. $35,777). Engineering grads from NIU rank nearly even with their peers nationwide: $57,463 vs. $57,760.
“Employers aren’t ‘just’ looking for a degree anymore; they want more,” said David McCown, a member of the NIU Class of 2011 who majored in mechanical engineering. “Besides providing me with a quality education, NIU welcomed me to get involved both in and outside of classes. Those experiences made all the difference for me. I am not stuck in the pack; I am leading it.”
