Student Involvement & Leadership Development takes that approach to its annual service event, NIU Cares Day. The 2012 event is scheduled for April 14; however, work to convene the planning committee and to recruit volunteers to assist that day already are under way.

An NIU Cares Day kickoff and preview meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in Room 100 of the Campus Life Building.

Becky Harlow, assistant director for community service, and chairs of the sub-committees will share details of the 2012 event, including a quick history of NIU Cares Day as well as any changes that will be implemented for the new year.

Interested faculty and staff also can find out how they can get involved and support the event — from serving on the planning committee to volunteering on the day of the event to cleaning out their garage to find some items on the NIU Cares Day wish list.

“Faculty and staff are essential to making NIU Cares Day a success each year. They are our word of mouth and our advocates for service to our students,” Harlow says.

“One of the things that makes NIU Cares Day so special is that it’s a time when all of NIU comes together to reach out into the community to make this huge day of service happen for our neighbors in DeKalb County,” she adds. “SILD would love to welcome any new individuals who are looking for an opportunity to get involved behind the scenes and at the event to create a quality experience for our student volunteers.”

Those who cannot attend Nov. 30 but still wish to participate in the planning process should contact Harlow at rharlow@niu.edu by Friday, Dec. 2, with their interest. The four sub-committees are Community Outreach, Campus Recruitment, Logistics and Fund-Raising.
