October open house draws higher attendance

November 4, 2011

Photo of an autumn campus tour at NIUAttendance soared 25 percent at NIU’s open house in October.

The rise in turnout suggests there is increased interest in the school and its vision to be the most student-centered public research university in the Midwest and to grow enrollment to 30,000 by 2020.

President John Peters this fall announced his ambitious plan to boost the profile and enrollment at the region’s premier state university, pledging to provide substantially more student opportunities to participate in academic enrichment and engaged learning opportunities.

“NIU students will have even more support to guarantee they get the most out of their academic experience,” Peters said. “We will attract more top high school students, provide significantly more academic scholarships, and engage many more students in our honors program. Among the region’s employers and parents, the NIU degree will be the gold standard.”

With a strong history of working with area high schools and community colleges, NIU helps students to afford and achieve their higher education goals.

New merit scholarships this fall include the DeKalb County Scholarship, the Northern Pact Scholarship, the NIU Transfer Student Scholarship and the 4 + 3 Pre-law Scholarship; NIU’s Centennial Scholarship and VIP Access Grant programs have been expanded. Nearly 1,700 new students enrolled this fall with NIU merit-based scholarships.

NIU programs – seven colleges offer a combined 63 undergraduate, 78 graduate and 20 Ph.D. programs – are ranked by U.S. News & World Report, BusinessWeek and Crain’s Chicago Business. The academic experience is enriched by opportunities for research, themed learning communities, internships and on-campus activities that include the University Honors Program.

Meanwhile, NIU is experiencing a vibrant rebirth with the construction of a new residential complex and multi-million dollar renovation of existing facilities. A new intramural athletic field complex and new, state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture halls and computer labs will dramatically improve student life.

Students and families are invited to see what the gold standard of excellence looks like from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, during NIU’s Veterans Day open house. Registration is available online.
