On a breezy morning in central Indiana, the Northern Illinois cross country team kicked off its postseason schedule with an 11th place showing at the MAC Championships.

The finish was a one spot improvement from last season. However, the below-average temperatures and a brisk wind hindered the Huskies’ performance on the Muncie Elks Golf Course.

“I’m really disappointed with our race today,” said NIU head coach Greg Hipp. “We have a lot of things we need to correct at the performance level. We didn’t stick with the race plan and we have a lot of adjustments to make.”

Junior Courtney Oldenburg led the Huskie pack with a 54th place showing overall. The West Salem, Wis., native crossed the finish line in a time of 23:01.60.

About three seconds behind Oldenburg was Claire McAuley, who took 58th with a 23:05.10 clip. Freshman Jamie Burr crossed the finish line with a time of 23:33.70 to take 69th place.

Alexis Capps was next to cross the finish line for NIU with a time of 23:59.90 to take 77th. Katie Janssen and Jessica Troike rounded out the Huskie field, finishing 85th and 90th, respectively.

NIU will continue its postseason slate in two weeks as it hosts the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional Saturday, Nov. 12, on the NIU North 40. The competition begins at noon with the men’s 10K race, followed by the women’s 6K at 1 p.m.
