October 11, 2011

Recycling symbol in green grassNIU will host an electronic waste recycling event from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19

Open to all Illinois residents, the event will take place in the parking lot at 1615 W. Lincoln Hwy.

Electronic devices that can be recycled include cameras, computers (PC, laptop), computer cables, computer keyboards, computer mice, computer monitors, DVD/CD players, fax machines, mobile telephones, mp3 players, televisions, PDAs, printers, radios, scanners, telephones, video cassette recorders/players, video game consoles and Zip drives.

Cell phones will be diverted to local charitable collection efforts if they are separated from the other materials. There will be a small bin at the site for these items.

No hazardous materials will be accepted. No large appliances, such as refrigerators or dryers, will be accepted.

The Oct. 19 event supports the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act.

It is important that these devices be managed at the end of their useful lives in such a way as to prevent harm to the environment, the communities in which the devices are disposed and the workers processing the equipment. At the same time, these devices contain material that can be used in the manufacturing of new products. Material such as steel, aluminum, plastic, copper and precious metals can be separated and returned to the marketplace, giving them new life in new products.
