Facing Mid-American Conference opponents Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and host WMU, the Huskies came away from the weekend with six victories with a youthful team composed of six underclassmen and two seniors.
“We played like we belonged today,” said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell.
“I was proud of the way the girls bounced back today. We played tough. We played good. We came out and got some wins. The team is starting to come together, which is good. We played much better today.”
Both Huskies would then go on to win singles matches. Dekkinga took down BSU’s Ashlyn Rang 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (5). Youel did even better, beating UT’s Alexandra Cristello 6-4, 6-4 and then downing BSU’s Dena Boulieris 6-2, 6-1.
The other Huskie who earned a victory was Arantza De La Torre, who topped WMU’s Caroline Aleck 6-2, 6-3.
