Cross country to host NIU Open

September 9, 2011

Huskies women's cross countryThe Northern Illinois cross country team will return home Saturday, Sept. 10, as they will host the NIU Open at the NIU North 40, located on the northeast corner of campus.

The meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s 5K race, which will be immediately followed by the men’s 8K run. Both races will be dual scored, which pairs teams head-to-head in scoring in order to determine an overall winner.

Among the teams competing at the meet include Big Ten foe Northwestern, Illinois State, Creighton and UIC.

“We’re looking forward to racing on the home course,” said Huskie head coach Greg Hipp. “The girls definitely enjoy running at home where their families get to see them.”

The Huskies began their season last weekend at the UIC Opener. Courtney Oldenburg led the way for NIU with a 12th place finish, while Claire McAuley and Jamie Burr claimed 25th and 26th, respectively.

At last year’s NIU Open, Oldenburg took eighth place overall to lead all Huskies.

“We need to race more aggressively,” Hipp said. “We’ve had a good week of training and it seems that the girls have responded well to our meet at UIC last week. Hopefully, we can knock off a few teams that we saw there and will see at other meets.”

Admission is free to the public and parking will be available at the Anderson Hall parking lot.
