Students invited to join Leadership Academy

August 29, 2011

“Leadership is not the private reserve of a few charismatic men and women. It is a process ordinary people use when they are bringing forth the best from themselves and others.” (Kouzes and Posner, 2007)

Leadership AcademyAll NIU students are  invited to join the Leadership Academy and to attend the fall semester leadership workshops.

Each workshop will last around two hours, including a presentation, a round-table discussion and time to enjoy refreshments courtesy of the Campus Activities Board (CAB).

These workshops are a great way to expand on knowledge and understanding of leadership concepts, meet other students who are interested in leadership and to engage in thought provoking conversations.

The NIU Leadership Academy is a premier leadership development program for students at Northern Illinois University.

The program is primarily based on Kouzes and Posner’s 2007 “Leadership Challenge.” Kouzes and Posner suggest that leadership can be a learned skill, and that there are five practices of exemplary leadership which can be developed in order to become an engaging leader.

The five practices of exemplary leadership are “Model the Way,” “Inspire a Shared Vision,” “Challenge the Process,” “Enable Others to Act” and “Encourage the Heart.”

Through a combination of curricular (classroom-based) and co-curricular (outside the classroom) learning experiences, students should become better prepared for leadership roles in the community and around the world. Applications to join the Leadership Academy are accepted at any time of the year.

For more information on the Leadership Academy, contact Karla Neal in Student Involvement & Leadership Development at (815) 753-6511 or visit Campus Life Building, Room 150.
