Eddie Gomez Trio to perform Sept. 7 at NIU

The Eddie Gomez Trio will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall of the NIU School of Music.

A legendary bassist, the Grammy-winning Gomez been on the cutting edge of music for more than four decades.

His impressive resumé includes performances with jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans (11 years), Gerry Mulligan and Benny Goodman. His distinctive sound and style resonate on hundreds of recordings spanning the worlds of jazz, classical, Latin jazz, rhythm ’n’ blues, popular and contemporary music.

Gomez’s recent recording “Duets,” co-led with Carlos Franzetti on piano, won Best Instrumental Album at the 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.

Both composer and teacher, Gomez is artistic director at Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rica, teaches double-bass at the Oberlin Jazz Conservatory in Ohio and collaborates with some of the most prestigious conservatories and music schools in Europe, South America, the United States, Asia and Japan.

During this one-week tour, the Eddie Gomez Trio featuring Stefan Karlsson and NIU’s own Rodrigo Villanueva (a jazz studies professor) will perform and offer master classes at many universities and jazz related venues in the Midwest area, covering 5 different states in only eight days.

In the hours before his evening concert at NIU, Gomez will offer an 11 a.m. jazz bass clinic (location to be announced) and a 4 p.m. jazz trio master class in the School of Music Recital Hall.

The Eddie Gomez Trio performances at NIU are possible thanks to the valuable support and collaboration of the NIU School of Music 220 Concert Series, the NIU Jazz Studies Program, the Center for Latino and Latin American Studies, Jazzling Records, Sabian Cymbals, Yamaha Drums, Vic Firth Drum Sticks and Evans Drum heads.
