Outing Centre offers Great Lakes adventure

Photo of Pictured Rocks National LakeshoreEnjoy the “last weekend of summer” in the beautiful scenery on the shore of Lake Superior in northern Michigan.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore contains 42 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail, and travelers will hike approximately 15 miles of this gentle terrain.

Sand and rock formations along the largest, coldest and most pristine of the Great Lakes will make this a visually compelling group experience.

A pre-trip meeting will be held at 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, in the Outing Centre. This event is classified as LevelĀ 1, meaning moderate physical conditioning is necessary, but experience and technical knowledge is not required.

Dates: Friday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 5

  • Early registration cost and deadline: Member $150 / Non-member $175 by Wednesday, Aug. 24
  • Regular registration cost and deadline: Member $175 / Non-member $200 by Thursday, Sept. 1
  • Cost includes use of camping and backpacking equipment, camping permits, food, transportation and trip leaders.

Leave No Trace (LNT) Awareness Workshop

Before departing for Michigan, participants should become familiar with LNT ethics with an overview of the program and a simple approach to responsible outdoor recreation. Hikers also will have an opportunity to participate in demonstrations and activities. Participants will receive a certificate of completion and materials.

  • Date and time: 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, and Wednesday, Nov. 16.
  • This is a free event.
