Football camp ends Saturday with family fun

Photo of boys cheering on the Huskies with "NIU!" painted on their chestsNorthern Illinois fans are invited to get ready for the 2011 Huskie football season Saturday, Aug. 20, at the team’s Annual Family Fun Day.

Coach Dave Doeren and his players will mark the final day of preseason football camp with a scrimmage and several post-practice events.

The Huskies will take the field at 11:35 a.m. for the final practice of Doeren’s first NIU preseason camp. Fans are welcome to arrive early as NIU will host a Select-a-Seat event on the West Side of Huskie Stadium during the scrimmage with available seats for the 2011 season marked.

NIU Athletics personnel also will be on hand to answer ticket questions and take ticket orders at the customer service kiosk on the West Side.

Victor E. HuskieThe Northern Illinois cheerleaders and NIU mascot Victor E. Huskie will be on hand and the NIU “Bounce House” will be set up in the North End Zone adjacent to the Yordon Center to entertain the kids.

Posters and schedule cards will be available and following the practice, Northern Illinois players will sign autographs and meet fans in the North End Zone.

Northern Illinois University, through Housing & Dining, is also inviting all incoming NIU freshmen to attend Saturday’s practice as part of a new “We Are Huskies” event. The students will watch practice from the East Side and following practice, Doeren will address the students and he and the Huskie team will lead the students in the Huskie Fight Song.

Practice is expected to last approximately 90 minutes to two hours. Parking is available on the side streets and lots around the stadium.

Northern Illinois opens the season Saturday, Sept. 3, when Army makes its first visit to Huskie Stadium.
