Mike Fortner, a professor in the NIU Department of Physics and a Republican member of the Illinois House of Representatives, is the focus of a chicagonews cooperative piece on the lawsuit filed by Illinois GOP challenging the new legislative map.

“It Can Take a Scientist to Help Understand Redistricting,” reported by Kristen McQueary, also appeared in the New York Times and in an audio format on  Chicago public radio station WBEZ.

Fortner, the former mayor of West Chicago, was elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 2007. He came to NIU as a postdoctoral student in 1987 and began teaching here in 1993.

“I’m not a lawyer, so it’s hard for me to assess the lawsuit’s chances,” Fortner says in McQueary’s story. “But I think there are reasonable grounds for looking at how this map was put together and that it did not meet the types of standards required by federal and state law.”
