Chad Spann signs free agent contract with Colts

Former Northern Illinois University running back Chad Spann agreed to terms with his hometown Indianapolis Colts Tuesday according to Spann.

Tuesday marked the first day NFL teams could sign undrafted free agents.

Spann, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., was the 2010 Vern Smith Leadership Award recipient after leading the Mid-American Conference and ranking 20th in the nation in rushing averaging 99.46 yards a carry.

Also the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Spann set the school record for rushing touchdowns in a single season with 22, which also led the nation. His 49 career rushing touchdowns scored ranks second on the Huskies’ all-time list, while his 300 points scored is fourth on NIU’s all-time career list.

A first team All-MAC selection, Spann was named MAC West offensive player of the week after his performance in NIU’s 34-23 victory over Minnesota. He rushed for a career-high 223 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries against the Golden Gophers. It was one of six 100-yard rushing efforts in 2010 and 10 for his career.

The Colts report to Anderson, Ind. for training camp Sunday and their first preseason game is Aug. 13 at St. Louis.
