Dave Doeren takes one giant leap…out of a plane

July 12, 2011

It’s been an eventful summer for Northern Illinois head football coach Dave Doeren.

He sang the seventh-inning stretch at Wrigley Field. He drove in excess of 125 mph on the track at Chicagoland Speedway. He got up close and personal with cows and corn at a 6,300-acre farm in Maple Park, Ill. He took batting practice and shagged fly balls with the Kane County Cougars.

However, in terms of daring excursions, Doeren’s latest adventure – the fifth of sixth in the NIUHuskies.com “Doeren Discovers” web series – flies above them all. Doeren’s latest escapade saw he and assistant coach Ryan Nielsen leap out of an airplane at 14,000 feet for a tandem skydive over the skies of nearby Rochelle, Ill. on a recent Saturday.

Doeren’s day began with a brief instructional class on the skydiving basics. While waiting for his number to be called, he and Nielsen watched other skydivers gently descend back to Earth and visited with fellow jumpers. Faced with a truly unique experience, the first-year Huskie head man once again appeared calm and collected while awaiting the exhilarating experience ahead.

While on the plane, moments from jumping, Doeren even challenged Huskie fans to match his dedication to the program saying he was jumping out of a plane for NIU football and all they had to do was show up at six home games!

But this episode of Doeren Discovers, can’t be adequately described, it has to be watched. To see the skydiving exploits of the fearless Dave Doeren, go to www.NIUHuskies.com.

For six weeks this summer, “Doeren Discovers” has introduced Huskie fans to their new head coach as he experienced the attractions of the northern Illinois region.

Each week, fans have been invited to answer a multiple choice question based on the video in order to win a chance to run out of the tunnel with the Huskies at the NIU-Wisconsin game at Soldier Field on Saturday, Sept. 17. The winning entry will also be on the field during the pregame build-up, and receive two club-level tickets, a parking pass and Huskie gear.

There is one new original “Doeren Discovers” webisode remaining! Where will Doeren’s adventures take him next?
