NIU technicians successfully installed a temporary power generator on the east side of Swen Parson Hall over the weekend. The new generator will protect service to an important ITS computer room in Swen Parson Hall during unexpected electricity outages on campus.
Workers had to shut down power to the computer room in order to install the temporary generator. The planned power outage suspended access to several university-based online applications including Blackboard, GroupWise, MyNIU and PeopleSoft. Access to the NIU online applications was restored by mid-morning Sunday.
The temporary generator features an automatic transfer switch that is programmed to react on its own within 20 seconds of a power disruption. The ITS computer room already has a battery back-up system in place for added security.
“This is a smart step for our campus,” said Jeff Daurer, director of capital budgeting and planning for the Division of Finance and Facilities. “We are taking this proactive measure now to protect our computer room against external electricity outages in the future.”
