NIU learned today that its performance in the classroom also put the Huskies into an elite category as Northern Illinois was one of only 14 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams honored with a Public Recognition Award by the NCAA.

Each year, the NCAA recognizes programs that rank in the top 10 percent in each sport for their multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR).

The APR provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement for every NCAA team as it tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team. APR measures eligibility and retention for each NCAA Division I team each semester, providing a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.

The most recent multi-year APRs are based on scores from the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.

Northern Illinois earned a Public Recognition Award in football for the first time, and the 2010 Huskies are the eighth NIU team, and first Northern Illinois men’s team, to be recognized since the NCAA began honoring programs in 2006.

Northern Illinois is the first Mid-American Conference football team ever to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

“I am extremely proud that our football team has earned this Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for its most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate,” said Jeff Compher, NIU associate vice president and director of Athletics.

“By qualifying for this recognition, NIU football is in elite company with some of the top academic schools in the country. This accolade reinforces our culture of Developing Champions, and shows that you can succeed at the highest levels both in the classroom and on the field.”

The Huskies were part of the football APR Public Recognition Award list that also included Air Force, Boise State, Clemson, Duke, Miami (Fla.), Middle Tennessee State, Navy, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rice, Rutgers, Stanford and Vanderbilt.

Tuesday’s release by the NCAA included the list of 909 teams across all sports to receive this year’s Public Recognition Awards. Full APR scores for all teams will be released Tuesday, May 24.
