The Northern Illinois University softball team suffered a 2-0 setback to Miami (OH) Thursday night in its second game of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Softball Tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.

The loss ends NIU’s run in the tournament. The Huskies, the No. 3 seed, finished the 2011 season with a 26-27 record.

The RedHawks (31-21), the No. 7 seed, scored all its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners at second and third and two outs, Kristie Fehrenbach singled scoring Kristy Arbour from third. An errant throw by Huskie second baseman Gianna Cipollone (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) allowed Jenna McGivney to score from second and Fehrenbach to advance to second.

The Huskie bats were unable to generate any offense against Jessica Simpson, the 2011 MAC Pitcher of the Year. The junior right-hander held NIU to three hits while striking out 14 batters. Senior Zoe Sinner (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), freshmen Shelby Miller (Ottawa, Kan./Ottawa) and Nicole Gremillion (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins) accounted for the Huskie hits.

Gremillion pitched six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits. She struck out three and walked a batter. She finished the season with an 8-5 record.
