Community School of the Arts plans recitals

Photo of a French hornThe NIU Community School of the Arts has announced the recital schedule for the spring.

Soloists and ensemble performances are featured in May on the stage of the Recital Hall and Boutell Memorial Concert Hall of the NIU Music Building. Most performances end with receptions. All are free and open to the public.

CSJazz Band performs twice this spring. This dynamic group can be heard at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the House. They appear at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 8, on the Concert Hall stage. The band is directed by Donnie Norton. Auditions for next year’s CSJazz Band are Sunday, May 15.

The traditional and Suzuki guitar students of Eric Schroeder perform in the Recital Hall at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 2.

The junior string orchestra, CSA Symphonette, performs at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 3. CSA Sinfonia, the full orchestra for high school students, performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. Both ensembles perform on the stage of the Concert Hall and are directed by Linc Smelser. Auditions for next year’s CSA Sinfonia are Sunday, May 15.

The piano students of Georgia Price and Glenda Courtois-Garcia and the flute and violin students of Lynn Vogl perform at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in the Recital Hall.

The Showcase Recitals are scheduled for 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7. These three recitals feature many soloists playing on different instruments in the Recital Hall.

Also performing Saturday, May 7, in the Concert Hall are the Suzuki violin students of Ann Montzka-Smelser, Karen Weckerly and Laurie Rodriguez. This recital begins at 10 a.m.

The CSA Children’s Choir performs at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, in the Recital Hall. The choir is directed by Mary Lynn Doherty. 

At 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, the cello students of Linc Smelser perform solos in the Recital Hall. 

The Suzuki piano students of Marilyn Montzka and Susan Breitner-Hurm perform at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 15, in the Recital Hall.

Corinne Ruff, a high school senior from Sycamore, gives her senior recital on the violin at 7 p.m. Monday, May 23, in the Recital Hall. Ruff has studied violin with the Suzuki program and has been a member of CSA Sinfonia for many years.

The CSA String Quartet takes the stage of the Recital Hall at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, May 26. This group has been playing together since last summer and is directed by Laurie Rodriguez.
