According to a recent study published by the National Retail Federation, one in five Americans works in retail. Surveyed retail executives identified critical needs for hiring and career path development. Eighty-three percent cited leadership development and sixty-two percent talent management as critical areas.
The Chicago Tribune reported Sunday, March 13, that retail has experienced recent job growth. The study reported 88,000 retail jobs were gained from February 2010 to January 2011.
Hiring needs were identified in the following functional areas: merchandising, retail operations (stores, field), merchandise planning, store associates, finance, information technology, inventory management, human resources, marketing and advertising, logistics and transportation, multi-channel e-commerce and catalog.
Retail leaders will speak on the diverse leadership roles in retail. The expo will provide students with an opportunity to network with national companies in the retail industry. Students are advised to dress professionally and to bring résumés or business cards.
