Women’s golf team swings its way into Top 10 at annual NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate tourney

NIU women's golf teamThe Northern Illinois University women’s golf team sits eighth after the first round of play Thursday at the 25th annual NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Tampa, Fla.

The Huskies shot an opening round 330, their best score of the week, but have some ground to make it they want to catch Saint Leo which leads the field with a 301.

“We have one tournament under our belt and the longer we stay, they better we’ll get,” NIU head coach Pam Tyska said. “I’m pleased with a lot of things today. We have another day to make our mark and we are looking forward to doing that.”

Kelsie Passolt (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) shot an opening round 80 to lead the way for Northern Illinois. She is tied for 19th, nine strokes behind the leader, Jordan Hatch of Saint Leo who shot a 71. Freshman Allie Parthie (Marinetta, Wis./Marinetta) carded an 82 for 29th, while Kim Bailey (Gibson City, Ill./Gibson City-Melvin Sibley) is in 33rd with an 83.

Michelle Caporusso (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) and freshman Katie Kuhn are tied for 43rd and round out the NIU competitors, each shooting an 85.
