NIU senior Vince Castillo was named to the 2011 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Wrestling Team, the league announced today.
“Vince is a hard-working, dedicated student-athlete and an outstanding individual,” NIU head coach Dave Grant said. “He has worked hard on and off the mat. I am happy to see him rewarded for all his efforts.”
Castillo, a native of Western Springs, Ill., posted a 9-16 overall record, including a 6-9 dual meet record moving up a weight class to 149 this season. The Lyons Township product took sixth place at the Michigan State Open and turned in a season high three match winning streak Feb. 4-12.
One of 10 wrestlers, and the only Huskie named to the Academic All-MAC Team, Castillo has earned Victory Scholar (3.5-4.0 GPA) status within the NIU’s Academic Excellence program for the second-straight year while pursuing his degree in Kinesiology.
He was also named to the 2010 Academic All-MAC Team.
The NIU wrestling team is still competing as senior Bryan Deutsch (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) and junior Brad Dieckhaus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) will be competing at the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships Mar. 17-20 in Philadelphia, Pa.
