Former junior college All-American placekicker Josh Gallington has signed a national letter of intent to play football for the Northern Illinois Huskies, NIU head coach Dave Doeren announced Tuesday.

Gallington, who has spent the last two seasons at Bakersfield College in Bakersfield, Calif., becomes the 23rd member of Doeren’s first signing class at Northern Illinois.

Gallington converted on 97-of-99 point after touchdown attempts and made 29-of-34 field goals in two seasons at Bakersfield to account for 184 points. He made 12-of-14 field goals and all 47 of his PAT attempts as a sophomore after scoring 101 points on 17 field goals (in 20 attempts) and 50 PATs (in 52 attempts) in 2009.

He led the state in PAT percentage and in field goal percentage as a sophomore and ranked first in the state in kick scoring his freshman season. He made a long field goal of 48 yards in 2010 and was true on two attempts from 46 yards in 2009.

Following his freshman season at Bakersfield in 2009, Gallington was a first team all-conference and all-state choice. He went on to claim first team Junior College All-America honors. At one point during the 2009 season, the 5-11, 185-pound kicker made 16 consecutive field goals. Versus Allan Hancock College in the California state junior college playoffs, he kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to give the Renegades a 24-21 victory.

As a sophomore, his 17 field goals included a 35-yard overtime game-winner versus Ventura College. Bakersfield won the National Northern Conference in each of his years at the school with a 10-2 record in 2009 and an 8-3 mark in 2010. He qualified for the honor roll three times during his career.

Gallington is a native of Bakersfield who prepped at Bakersfield Christian High School, where he was a two-time all-conference selection as well as an all-area choice as a senior. He earned second-team all-state honors in the California Small Schools Division as a senior and was selected to play in the 2008 Arena Bowl High School All-Star Game. As a senior, he ranked sixth in the state in kick scoring.

He redshirted the 2008 season at Bakersfield before going on to become the Renegades’ starting kicker in each of the last two years.

The Huskies announced the addition of 22 players for 2011 on Wednesday, Feb. 2, with three of those individuals already enrolled at Northern Illinois and set to take part in 2011 spring practices.

NIU will begin its 2011 spring football practices Tuesday, March 22, with the spring game set for Saturday, April 23, at Huskie Stadium.
