NIU’s Alumni Association and Career Services partnered Thursday, Feb. 10, for the third annual Career Resources Networking Night.

The event was held at the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center and featured guest speaker Susan Caplan, an NIU alumna and business communication and marketing specialist. The 85 current NIU students, alumni and community members who attended also were invited to join break-out sessions which focused on resume writing, job searching, interviewing skills and preparing for job fairs.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of the event,” says Linda Alberty, assistant director of alumni relations. “It was also very rewarding to see how well audience members reacted to Susan Caplan as the keynote speaker.”

As president of SC Associates, LLC, Caplan speaks at universities, corporations and organizations about the importance of marketing one’s self to stand out to prospective employers.

Caplan covered a variety of marketing techniques which included the value of utilizing social media, creating business cards and preparing elevator speeches for networking events.

In 2009, Caplan wrote “Marketing Yourself to the Real World: 10 Simple steps to gain a competitive edge in the job market.”

“It’s helped a lot of people, and I’m really grateful,” Caplan says regarding her book. “If it helps one person, that’s great — especially in this economy.”

Caplan is scheduled to speak Wednesday, March 23, at the NIU Naperville campus Networking Night with a slightly refocused presentation for those who were unable to attend.
