Student Financial Aid to host FAFSA Fun Fest

February 11, 2011

Victor E. HuskieIt’s time to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The NIU priority filing date for the 2011-2012 FAFSA is Tuesday, March 1. This is not a deadline, as Student Financial Aid will continue to accept applications and process financial aid for students after this date. The priority filing date is to encourage students to apply early to ensure the best possible financial aid award package.

Some programs designed to assist the neediest students have limited funding and, therefore, funds are exhausted early. Of special note: The awarding of the State of Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant is expected to be suspended even earlier this year than last year’s date of April 19, 2010.

To prepare for FAFSA filing, Student Financial Aid will host FAFSA Fun Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, in Swen Parson Hall 245.

In collaboration with the Scholarship Office and the Office of Student Academic Success, the event kicks off “FAFSA Fridays” completion workshops. On- and off-campus partners have donated prizes for a student raffle, food items will be offered, tours of the Student Financial Aid and Scholarship offices will be ongoing and Victor E. Huskie will show up for part of the day to cheer on students.

FAFSA Fridays are scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. from Feb. 18 through May 6 in Swen Parson Hall 245.

Advisers are always available throughout the week to assist students with the online submission of their 2011-2012 FAFSAs. Plan to bring both student and parent 2010 federal tax returns and W-2s along with PINs and passwords.
