Alumni Association helps alumni networks

The saying continues to prove itself true in the current economic climate. Even as the use of social media increases in popularity, there is still no substitute for face-to-face networking.

When you use face-to-face networking to expand your circle of professional contacts, you are able to establish relationships, grow trust and give your connections that personal touch that can mean all the difference.

The NIU Alumni Association recognizes the importance of in-person networking, and is dedicated to offering alumni several such opportunities each year.

The Alumni Association has several Affinity Groups: groups of NIU alumni and friends who share a common background or interest and gather regularly for social and networking events. For example, the Computer Science Alumni Council regularly holds informal social gatherings for alumni in the IT field.

In addition to Affinity Groups, the Alumni Association offers numerous events each year dedicated to reconnecting alumni with the university and with each other.

Events can range from sporting events to wine tastings to regional events across the country, and provide a fun and comfortable way for alumni to make those important connections. In February and March alone, the Alumni Association is planning several networking events:

Career Resources Networking Night: 5:30 to 9 p.m. tonight, Feb. 10, Barsema Alumni & Visitors Center.

Visit the Alumni Association at the Spring Job Fair: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, Convocation Center.

Alumni Networking Night: 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, NIU-Naperville.

Third Annual Women’s Networking Night: “Health Issues Affecting Women Today,” an installment in the Alumni Association’s Chicago Speaker Series, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31, NIU Chicago Office.
