Huskies women's track and fieldWith the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships nearly one month away, the Northern Illinois track and field team will get its first look at MAC competition Saturday, Jan. 29, when the Huskies head to Marion, Ind., for the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational.

NIU will catch a glimpse of MAC Championship competition when the Huskies compete against Ball State, in addition to 11 track and field squads at Saturday’s meet. The IWU Invitational is scheduled to begin at noon with the shot put events, while running events will follow at 12:15 p.m. with the Distance Medley Relay.

“The past two weeks have been great competition for the ladies,” said head NIU track and field coach Connie Teaberry.

“This week we’ll go up against Indiana Wesleyan and Ball State, who is a member of our conference.  We’ve had a couple of unfortunate, small injuries so some of our girls will not be competing. However, we think with the ladies that we have participating we will have a really productive meet and it will be one step forward in our preparation for the MAC Championships that will take place at the end of February.”

Last weekend, the Huskies took home four first-place finishes at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill.

Rasheta Butler claimed two first-place titles, winning the 60-meter dash (7.75) and the 200-meter dash (25.69), while fellow sprinter Roneisha Frye won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.94. Jenner Sio also earned a first-place mark when she notched a leap of 36-10.50 in the triple jump.

At the conclusion of the IWU Invitational, results will be made available online. Following Saturday’s competition, the Huskies will take a two-week break before heading to the Iowa State Classic the weekend of Feb. 11.
