SóL was founded in 2006 in an effort to increase the retention and graduation rates of Latino males at NIU.
SóL is a network of students, staff and faculty dedicated to assisting Latino males in navigating their academic pursuit and attaining the degree of their choice.
In only a few short years, the organization has grown into one of the largest Latino organizations on campus. The men of SóL engage in activities designed to promote academic success, personal and professional development, and community leadership.
SóL hosted its first conference titled “Latinos in Higher Education” at NIU this fall.
Student attendees received presentations on leadership development, goal setting, cultural awareness, financial planning, political activism and how to succeed in higher education. The influential speakers included NIU alumni as well as Juan Andrade, founder of United States Hispanic Leadership Institute; financial planner Miguel Arias; and Jennifer L. Rosato, dean of the NIU College of Law.
