University of Chicago professor will visit NIU to talk student achievement, how to teach writing

George Hillocks, Jr., professor emeritus at the University of Chicago, will visit the NIU campus Thursday, Oct. 28, for two presentations hosted by the Department of English and supported by the Larry R. Johannessen Fund.

Hillocks will conduct a workshop from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Reavis Hall 211 on “Basic (and Commonly Overlooked) Principles in the Teaching of Writing.”

From 7 to 9 p.m., he will present “The Impact of Classroom Activities on Student Achievement” in Caven Auditorium (Room 126) in Gabel Hall.

Hillocks is the author of “Research in Written Composition,” “Teaching Writing as Reflective Practice,” “Ways of Thinking, Ways of Teaching” and “Narrative Writing: Learning a New Model for Teaching.”
