Presidential statement on National Day of Remembrance regarding suicides of young gay men and women

October 19, 2010

As the nation pauses on this day of remembrance regarding the suicides of young gay men and women, most recently Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi and Johnson & Wales University sophomore Raymond Chase, we should all be reminded of the impact bullying, harassment, and ignorance have on at-risk individuals.

NIU values rich diversity amongst its students, faculty, and staff, and we continually encourage our university community to learn from each other both in and out of the classroom.  NIU strives to be an inclusive and welcoming campus for everyone—one that encourages both understanding and acceptance and is committed to the safety and well-being of all our students.

NIU’s LGBT Resource Center offers assistance and advocacy for students, faculty and staff who need support.  In addition to our LGBT Resource Center, the campus has many additional resources available to support students.  If you are a student who is experiencing distress, harassment or discrimination, I encourage you to contact the Counseling & Student Development Center (CSDC)

We are all Huskies and we continue to move forward, together forward.
