With just one competition left before the Huskies head to the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships, the Northern Illinois women’s cross country team will look to wrap its regular season on a high note Saturday, Oct. 16, when NIU travels to West Salem, Wis. to compete in the Tori Neubauer Invitational.
The Huskies will kick-off the six-kilometer race, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, at 11:30 a.m. at the Maple Grove Country Club.
“We want to head into MAC Championships with a positive attitude,” said NIU assistant cross country coach Mark McConeghey. “I think the way to do that is have everybody run well this weekend, and I am very confident that the girls will be able to do just that.”
Last year, the Huskies placed 13th of 27 teams at the Tori Neubauer Invitational. Sophomore Courtney Oldenburg, a West Salem, Wis. native, finished first for NIU with a 17th-place finish.
NIU will enter Saturday’s invitational after a two-week break from competition. Last time out, the Huskies competed in the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 2, where the NIU raced to a 16th-place finish in the five-kilometer race. Oldenburg finished first for NIU, while Lindsay DeReadt, Sunsea Shaw, Breanna Brevitt and Nora Ferguson rounded out the top-five finishers for the Huskies.
After training for the past two weeks McConeghey feels the team is ready to return to competition.
“I think they girls have been very determined and very focused,” McConeghey said. “After the Notre Dame Invitational, we have been concentrated on improvement and closing the gap the between our number one and two runners. The team has been very focused in training and they are ready to get out there and compete.”
