Two alums of the NIU Department of Mathematical SciencesSean Nank and Nicola Wethall — have received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

The awards are the nation’s highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science. They recognize outstanding K-12 teachers for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession.

Since 1983, more than 4,000 teachers have been recognized for their contributions to mathematics and science education.

President Obama selected only 103 science and mathematics teachers during the summer to receive the PAEMST. “Today we honor some of the best of these teachers and thank them for their dedication,” Obama said. “They are inspirations not just to their students, but to the nation and the world.”
