Summer brings changes to library

August 19, 2010

"Founders Memorial Library"A number of changes occurred at Founders Memorial Library over the summer.

Founders Memorial Library relocated its videos and audio books to a new area that allows library users to browse the collection and checkout items of interest. Thousands of VHS and DVD videos and hundreds of cassette and CD audio books are on open shelves in the Periodicals area behind the escalators. Videos can be checked out for two weeks and audio books for four weeks.

Videos for in-class/classroom use on certain dates should be booked or requested well in advance so that items can be set aside for faculty members. To book videos, contact Wally Grant at (815) 753-1992, via e-mail at [email protected] or in person at the Periodicals service desk.

Advanced notice also is encouraged for videos for course reserve. To reserve videos, contact Brandon Welch at Reserves Processing & Maintenance Unit at (815) 753-9813 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Bound Print Periodicals Section

The bound print periodicals, located on the first floor of Founders Memorial Library, have been rearranged to follow their call number order. This will allow journals to stay together even if the name of the journal has changed.

Interlibrary Loan Periods Change

New loan periods went into effect Aug. 1 for library material borrowed from other I-Share libraries. I-Share is the statewide consortium of academic libraries.

Faculty and graduate students who request library materials from VuFind, the library’s online catalog, will have shorter loan periods than item(s) borrowed from the NIU Libraries. I-Share loan periods are 28 days with a maximum of three renewals, or 16 weeks total. The item(s) borrowed can be renewed online through a personal account in the VuFind catalog. Help in creating a VuFind account is available online.

Off-Campus Authentication Change
The libraries no longer are using Information Technology Services’ SSL Anytime for off-campus patrons to establish a connection to the libraries’ databases. Patrons are to use the “Off-Campus Authentication” link found on the front page of the Libraries’ website under the “Search Quick Links.” See FAQ / Help for more information.
