NIU offering wide variety of youth summer camps

June 15, 2010

smokeyHot months turn into cool experiences when young students take advantage of Northern Illinois University’s multitude of summer camp opportunities.

Think you’re the next Spielberg? Try film camp. Prefer pen and notebook? NIU offers camps in creative writing and journalism. Want to tread the boards or act in movies? NIU has theatre arts camps, both for middle school and high school. Love to swing in a big band? Scat your way to jazz camp. If your talent deserves a gallery showing, there’s a visual arts camp.

Some children and teens might enjoy day camps – no overnight stay – that cover everything from art and voice (including Karaoke Superstar Day Camp) to band and orchestra.

For those whose brains are geared for science, there’s a wide variety of camps about scientific discovery, exploration and investigations as well as engineering.

“We try to give campers the experience of truly doing science,” says Pati Sievert, NIU’s coordinator for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Outreach. “Whether you call it investigation, exploration or experimentation, it’s all hands-on.”

Of course, Intercollegiate Athletics also provides plenty of NIU Huskie Sports Camps for young athletes, and Recreation Services offers the always-popular Huskie Pup Summer Camp. The Community School of the Arts also offers many music and art classes, ensembles and private lessons.

Plan your summer on campus now. Some camps, such as STEM CAREER Investigations, offer camp scholarships. For a full listing, see www.niu.edu/summercamp.
