Undergraduate research program facilitates faculty-student engagement

June 14, 2010

Northern Illinois University sponsors a unique Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program. It encourages faculty to engage undergraduates in one-to-one mentorships focused on faculty research, thus providing students with opportunities to work as collaborators in the search for new knowledge.

NIU undergraduates who have conducted research under the watchful eyes of their professors had a chance to show off that work late this past spring. Northern’s first-ever Undergraduate Research Day event showcased student posters, exhibits and digital representations in two categories – “Science, Technology, Engineering and Math” and “Social Science, Humanities and Arts” – and the cream of the crop were awarded money and plaques!
